Generating energy

The North West has a long history as a centre of power generation. Today, the region has the highest concentration of nuclear research and development in the UK and almost all of the country’s fuel manufacture and reprocessing is based here. Along with the coal-fired power station at Fiddlers’ Ferry and two gas-fired stations, this sub sector makes a vital contribution to the region’s economy.

The region is also well placed to make the most of future developments in this sub sector. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is based in the North West, where much of the expertise in the field can be found. This work offers great potential for growth across the world. In addition, with the government backing new build nuclear power stations over the next decade, the region’s companies have the experience to play a key role.

This section highlights the wealth of information and support available to help businesses develop and grow.
