The benefits of leadership and management development

All organisations, whatever their size, need effective leadership and management and anyone taking on such a role will benefit from effective development.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) training and development survey 2005 which measured the attitudes of 664 training managers, “91% believe there is a direct link between investment in leadership development and business performance” and “98% believe that well-designed leadership activities can have a positive impact on the bottom line.” Another recent survey, the Tomorrow’s Leaders’ study, undertaken by Henley Management College, highlighted particular skills gaps around communication and team bonding, as well as appropriate use of emerging technologies. Although the majority of managers are working with teams that include remote workers, many are unprepared for the supervision of remote teams, and the majority haven’t received any training on how to manage such a team.

Improved leadership and management enables:

  • A competitive edge.
  • The development of a more effective, productive workforce.
  • Improved skills and efficiency in work practices.
  • Keeping ahead of the pace of change.
  • Improved staff morale and retention.
  • Motivating and empowering your people.

The CIPD have produced a factsheet that looks at the nature of training needs analysis (TNA), considers why TNA is important in an organisational setting, lists the data to include and outlines what follows a TNA exercise. Read the CIPD factsheet to identifying learning and training needs.
